5 Super Simple Posing Tips for your Brand Shoot

The percentage of people who feel uncomfortable in front of the camera is higher than you think, I’m used to be one of these too until I was shown & taught some really simple ways to feel much easier while the camera is clicking & will create much nicer images as a result.

Now it’s always worth saying to your photographer if you aren’t quite sure what to do with yourself during a shoot – they’ll help you get the most out of the experience too.

Let’s have a look at my top 5 tips.

Fidget.

Yes, really. For this you can move without someone telling you to hold it still all the time – OK so you might get asked to hold a post for a bit but when you constantly make little adjustments, like tilting your head, shifting your weight from one leg to another, looking left, looking right, looking up, moving one hand or arm, flick your hair, touch an ear…. it all just helps you from looking stiff & like a rabbit in headlights.  It also gives your photographer a ton of ways to give you content.  The images will be lighter, with personality & more memorable too.

Lean In

Hands up if you can hear your old teacher telling you to ‘stand or sit up straight’ during the annual school photos?  Or your Gran during a family photo?  Thing is that may well create a strong or proud look but when you lean forwards/in , towards the camera when you are in a seated position you create a really easy, relaxed, approachable look that you’ll LOVE!  If that wasn’t enough it’s a nice way to hide your mid section if you are conscious of it.

Be Handy

This is one of my first suggestions when we I’m discussing brand shoot plans with my clients.  Giving your hands something to do, whether that’s holding a brew, tucking hair behind your ear, flicking through a book, holding a pen, pointing at something on your screen or phone, will relax you & add story to the shots.  It’s such a simple thing to do I always find you switch off quicker & create more authentic photos too.

No Cheese!!

I’m not banning cheese from your life (& to be honest if you bring it along to your shoot I’ll be your best friend ever…) but I want you to stop saying “cheese”, because a) it’s cheesy & b) it can create over stretched smiles that make you look a little odd.  There are better words to mouth or say – my favourite is “happy” as it doesn’t create such a wide smile, it’s more controllable for you (particularly if you aren’t a fan of your teeth) & creates a natural gap with your top & bottom jaw.  Try it in the mirror, I think you’ll be surprised.   I never thought that a lack of cheese would make me happier…

Positive Vibes

This one might sound odd but I promise you it works.

I want you to trust me on this, but using the power of your mind to always think happy thoughts as the camera is on you has a habit of creating really smiley eyes, relax your body further & give you a ton of confidence along the way.

So I want you to really bear these simple tips in mind the next time you are in front of a camera.
